Toyota in damage control mode Friday after its communications chief Julie Hamp was arrested on suspicion of illegally bringing painkillers into Japan.
Hamp, an American and Toyota's first woman senior executive, was arrested after 57 Oxycodone pills were found in a small parcel labeled 'necklaces' tha༒t was sent from the U.S. to Hamp in Japan.
Hamp was promoted into the job in April and relocated to Tokyo this month, where she has been living in a hotel. She told police she did not think she had imported an illegal substance.
Prior approval from the Japanese government is nꦺeeded for bringing O🐈xycodone into the country, and it must be carried on an individual.
Toyota Presi🐓dent Akio Toyoda apologized for the i🎐ncident at a press conference on Friday.
If convicted, Hamp could face years in prison and deportation.
